Choose the right hinge for your cabinet

Concealed cabinet hinges, also called hidden cabinet hinges, sit mostly inside the cabinet when the door is closed. They are a clean option for modern cabinets and are common on frameless and European-style cabinet designs.

Overlay, face frame, and frameless options

Face frame cabinet hinges are made for cabinets with a front frame around the cabinet box. Frameless cabinet hinges are made for cabinet boxes without a face frame. Choosing the wrong type can make the door sit unevenly or stop it from closing properly.

Full overlay, partial overlay, and inset hinges all fit different door positions. If you are not sure which one you need, compare the old hinge with the new one and measure how much of the cabinet opening the door covers.

Corner hinges and special cabinet doors

Corner cabinet hinges are useful for folding cabinet doors, corner cabinets, and special cabinet layouts. A 135 degree hinge can help two connected doors open together on certain corner cabinet designs.

Lid support hinges and gas strut lift supports are used for lift-up cabinet doors, toy boxes, storage lids, and furniture tops. These are different from standard cabinet door hinges, so check the weight rating and opening direction before ordering.

Replacement and installation tips

When replacing cabinet door hinges, keep the old hinge nearby while checking the new one. Look at the mounting plate, screw pattern, opening angle, hinge cup, overlay size, and whether the hinge is soft close or self closing.

Use the right screws and tighten them evenly. If the cabinet door does not sit straight after installation, adjust the hinge screws slowly until the gap around the door looks even.

Care and maintenance

Cabinet hinges should open smoothly without scraping, sagging, or making the door feel loose. If a hinge starts to squeak, loosen, or pull away from the cabinet, check the screws and mounting plate first.

Clean cabinet hinges with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners around the moving parts, and keep excess water away from screws, springs, and soft close mechanisms.
